Harmony, Sound & Resonance

by Claudio Silvano

Sound Waves

Sound can be used purposefully to change both inner and external environments, thereby transforming our experience of reality.

If we actively listen to the chords of a beloved song or tune we will notice how the sounds that enter us through the portals of our ears quickly spread to and affect various areas of the body. These sounds can entice us into a rhythmic sway (a call to dance), or clench our throat with long forgotten emotion, or even spill a chalice of nectar within our hearts.

The power of sound and especially the power of the singing voice, is not a mystery, it has been recognised by all cultures throughout all time: it is said that ancient Saami magicians sung the world into being, Tuvan throat-singers claim that they were taught to produce harmonics by a waterfall, Sanskrit chants have the power to open our hearts and our consciousness to experiences of divine bliss, the heartbeat sound of a Native American drum connects those who hear it with the heart of Earth Mother. Even the Christian bible acknowledges at the very onset that “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God…”.

While the power intrinsic in sound is not a mystery, it is worth noting that only very recently has any real exploration begun. It is only recently that the various musical traditions from the four quarters of the world have become available to us on a scale and in a way never possible before. It is less than thirty years ago that in the west we first heard the astonishing sounds of the Tibetan monk’s ‘one-voice-choir’ and even more recently since harmonics first entered our awareness.

Musical festivals such as Womad attest to the healing power of sound and music from all around the world. Recently Sa, my wife, and I moved to Adelaide from Perth and had our first opportunity to have a Womadelaide experience and there, along with tens of thousands of others, were transported by the energy of peaceful harmony generated by the event.

Several times I heard the comment repeated that the event is unusually friendly and trouble-free in comparison to other music festivals. And after listening to the music played I could understand why: it was uplifting, whether gentle or passionate or powerful, it’s focus was clearly that of bridging gaps – what else could work in an international event like that? One group of Tuareg musicians from the Mali region of the Sahara seemed to know only a few words in English. “Welcome to the desert!” were the only words they spoke on a couple of occasions, their music and singing did the rest. I soon found myself seduced by their bluesy guitars and hypnotic rhythms into a timeless place, into a sway that might well be what one experiences from sitting astride of a camel. I was opened up to vast, endless inner vistas very much like the distant horizons of the desert. Their music, their voices gave me an experience of their own experience and another gap was bridged.

Elsewhere Carlos Nakai’s flute native notes lingered ethereally in the night air with a promise of stillness and inner peace and wove a powerful spell in the hearts of the rapt audience.

Voice and sound when used with healing intent are powerful unifiers that remind us of our commonality, our intrinsic oneness. Anything that does this can only benefit us and help heal the world.

Sound can be used purposefully to change both inner and external environments, thereby transforming our experience of reality. And when our experience changes, reality too is changed – for we have had a direct impact upon the world around us.

Here are some just some areas where sound can be used to bring about transformative outcomes:

INTERNAL

  • Relax tension and stress within the body

  • Quiet the mind and bring about clarity and focus

  • Clear energies within one’s energy field

  • Uplift the Spirit, touch the Divine within Oneness with all that is

  • Release suppressed emotions

  • Release fear and inhibitions

  • ·Sooth & comfort when emotionally stressed

  • Access hidden or unconscious feelings

  • Increase the flow of vital energy

EXTERNAL

  • Clear unwanted energies from an environment

  • Create Sacred Space

  • Create an ambience of peace and calm

  • Create an uplifting ambience of celebration

  • To experience oneness within a group.

In harmony and resonance,
